Plagiarism Policy

Plagiarism is the unethical act of copying someone else’s prior ideas, theories, processes, results or words without acknowledging the original source appropriately and adequately. The editorial team of the Journal of Chitwan Medical College strictly examines the incoming papers on their originality, reliability of contained information and correct use of citations. The editorial team of the Journal of Chitwan Medical College acknowledges that plagiarism is unacceptable and therefore establishes the following policies that state-specific actions (penalties) if plagiarism is identified in a manuscript submitted for publication in the Journal of Chitwan Medical College.

Policy:

The Journal of Chitwan Medical College respects intellectual property and aims at protecting and promoting original work of its authors. Manuscripts containing plagiarized material are against the standards of quality, research and innovation. Hence, all authors submitting articles to journal are expected to abide ethical standards and abstain from plagiarism, in any form.

The authors must ensure that the submitted manuscript:

- describes completely the original work;

- is not plagiarism;

- has not been published before in any language;

- the information used or words from other publications are appropriately indicated by reference or indicated in the text.

It is the responsibility of author to check whether submitted manuscript is subject to copyright or ownership rights, e.g. figures, tables, photographs, illustrations, trade literature and data. The author will need to obtain permission to reproduce any such items and include these permissions with their final submission. Where use is so restricted, the editorial office and Publisher must be informed with the final submission of the material. Please add any necessary acknowledgments to the typescript, preferably in the form of an Acknowledgments section at the end of the paper. Credit the source and copyright of photographs, figures, illustrations etc. in the supplementary captions.

The Policy of Screening for Plagiarism

 

The Journal of Chitwan Medical College adheres to international practices of preventing plagiarism hence suggests that all the submitted and published manuscripts must be free from plagiarism contents. All manuscripts submitted for publication to journal are cross-checked for plagiarism using iThenticate software. The Journal of Chitwan Medical College have been using iThenticate since September 2020.

Once the manuscript is submitted to the Journal of Chitwan Medical College, the managing editor will check the manuscript using iThenticate and observing the results obtained from the software, it will decide whether to accept for the further peer-review process or reject the manuscript. Moreover, we will recheck the plagiarism during the review process by the technical reviewers assigned to the manuscript.

Upon having established that the manuscript is plagiarized from some previously published work, the managing editor will review the manuscript and identify the degree of plagiarism under the following three types and suggest the editor in chief to take the action accordingly.

  1. Plagiarism Offense Type I (Minor Offense):

If some portion (less than two complete or part of it) of any article is plagiarized without significant data or idea, then it is assumed to have minor plagiarism offence.

Penalties: The last warning with the possibilities of penalties of type II and type III offence is given to the author(s) and a request to rewrite the plagiarized contents of the manuscript with proper citation of the original article. 

  1. Plagiarism Offense Type II (Intermediate Offense):

If a significant portion (more than two complete or less than 25% of the total content) of any article is plagiarized without significant data or idea, then it is assumed to have intermediate plagiarism offence.

Penalties: The submitted article is rejected and the author(s) is/are not allowed to resubmission the manuscript.

  1. Plagiarism Offense Type III (Severe Offense):

If a significant portion (more than 25% of the total content) of any article is plagiarized with significant data or idea, then it is assumed to have severe plagiarism offence.

Penalties: The paper is rejected and the author(s) is/are kept in the blacklist for 3 to 10 years of time depending on the severity of the plagiarism.

Authors and reviewers can adhere to the following steps to report plagiarism:

  • Inform the editor of the Journal of Chitwan Medical College where a plagiarized paper is published.
  • Send original and plagiarized papers with plagiarized part highlighted.
  • If evidence of plagiarism is convincing, editor should arrange for a disciplinary meeting.
