Abstract

Background: Acid peptic disorder (APD) is the most frequently encountered provisional diagnosis in general practice with Helicobacter pylori being the major causal agent. In the present study we aim to report the incidence of H. pylori infection among patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at a tertiary care center in central Nepal.

Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 101 patients with diagnosis of APD. An Upper gastrointestinal (UGI)  Endoscopy was performed on all the participants and biopsy specimen was obtained from various parts depending on the endoscopic findings.  Reports of H&E stain H. pylori status was recorded using a pre-formed proforma. Data analysis was done using SPSS-20.

Results: H. pylori infection was found in 41.6% (42/101) patients with female predominance (25/60) (59.5%). Both married men and women had higher prevalence of HP infection than their unmarried counterparts. Patients with blood group O were found to be the most affected.

Conclusions: A higher prevalence of H. pylori was found among APD patients who had undergone upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
